I would suggest, whatever you try, that you make sure to write down your windows key and then deauthorize your PC. That way, if it doesn’t work out and you want/need to go back, you can reinstall windows and not deal with the unlicensed copy BS.

Food for thought: you should start getting familiar with Linux, either with Virtualbox/VMware, or dual booting right now. When the time comes and Win10 reaches EOL, you know you will find reasons to just go with the flow and stay with Microsoft.

As for what flavor? There are a few that come to mind as “windowy”: Zorin, Mint, and the anything that uses KDE Plasma. Personally, I prefer Pop!_OS because I use MacOS as well and prefer that feel to windows a bit more, and System76 has done a fantastic job of making a polished product.

That’s what I did, anyway. The mental load of still having windows to fall back on if I couldn’t do something helped make the anxiety lighter and also helped me be motivated to try new things out. I couldn’t imagine having to learn something with a gun to my head!

My reason was that I had heard windows 11 was considering ads in their file explorer. Win10 already has enough prompts pushing edge and OneDrive. That, and many of my professors use Linux, and the ease with which they would install Python or C compilers was too much.

That and fucking OneDrive. Autosave isn’t able to function on O365 without OneDrive screw you microsoft

I switched over to Pop!_OS a year ago and I am extremely happy with my choice. I’ve recently had to go back to dual booting only because sunshine/moonlight streaming games across my home network was having serious issues with Linux–so only the games I want to stream up to my TV box are on windows. I 100% prefer Linux to Windows for everything you’ve mentioned, and Steam/Epic (Legendary game launcher(?)) has pretty much worked flawlessly. One minor quibble I have is that it is irritatingly hard to get mod managers working consistently, and I enjoy modding many of the games I play (Skyrim, oblivion, fallout, etc,.).

I’m chomping at the bit for the new Rust-based COSMIC desktop to be released by Pop!_OS though. Should be FY24.
