Technology@lemmy.world•USA Will Invest in High-Speed Train to Fight Climate ChangeEnglish
56·2 years agoEh, it was predicted we would die because the population growth was exceeding our ability to farm food, but then out of necessity the industrial revolution happened.
I think we are predicting we will die but out of necessity we will make the necessary changes to save ourselves just in time. Not just stopping emissions (this will only help slow the worsening, since we might be past the point of no return by the time we do this), but also carbon capture to remove the CO2, while simultaneously seeding extra clouds with something like the salt water canons running on cargo ships, and other such tech to reflect the sun while we get to work on CO2 capture.
The CO2 will have to be sequestered back in the ground, so a method will have to be made to liquify and pump it back in, but it’s theoretically possible.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tesla whistleblower calls cars with Autopilot “experiments in public roads”English
179·2 years agoLemmy as a whole appears to irrationally hate Tesla because of their stupid CEO. I think his penchant for calling what is essentially “advanced autopilot” FULL SELF DRIVING should be illegal. But he’s a car salesman and for some reason the government is letting him call it that. Be mad at our lawmakers for that. He’s just a sheister and our lawmakers suck at reining him in. Tesla cars themselves are actually really good. Very safe cars that don’t roll over because of the heavy battery located so low, very responsive acceleration, and some nice quality of life low hanging fruit in the technology department, like my phone being a key. I was told by my Tesla rep when I bought the car to not buy FSD. It’s experimental and will not ever probably be driving you to your destination safely. The fact that they sell it with a name that implies it will is the problem. And people believe it. That’s incredibly dangerous.

162·2 years agoWoah that sounds really great actually, considering Tesla probably has 10x the autopilot miles driven compared to other manufacturers.

Technology@lemmy.world•'They Want To Be The Gatekeepers': Car Dealers Are Stopping Customers From Buying EVsEnglish
3·2 years agoMight be the winter tires. Since the car is heavier I think tires might need to be a little beefier, and thus cost a little more.
Tesla did a pretty good job with their heat pump. Even with it though your range really suffers. I can’t remember exactly but it might take your range from 325 miles to something like 250/260. Without the heat pump I remember hearing something closer to half range, but that might be battery manufacturer specific, not sure. So like the other commenter said, make sure you get an EV with a heat pump if you live in a cold area.

Technology@lemmy.world•'They Want To Be The Gatekeepers': Car Dealers Are Stopping Customers From Buying EVsEnglish
10·2 years agoI’d say that last maintenance thing for many highish brands like Mercedes, BMW, etc. Lots of people make that complaint. But electric cars really aren’t known for maintenance costs. If you corner really hard, since the car is heavier you might go through tires a little quicker but that’s all. The battery that people like to complain about the potential cost lasts like 100,000-300,000 miles, so it’s like comparing to a full engine swap in a gasoline car.

9·2 years agoFor me the camera was a selling point. I was tired of hauling around a dslr on my trips. I find that the smart processing is good enough 90% of the time and I don’t want to both haul the camera and handle the post processing anymore. I’d rather just have 90% quality photos of my family and spend more time with them. Hire a photographer for weddings, etc, but really the smart processing is pretty impressive for day to day and even trips.

3·2 years agoI have been getting surveys asking my opinion on ai as a healthcare practitioner (pharmacist). I feel like they are testing the waters.
AI is really dangerous for healthcare right now. I’m sure people are using it to ask regular questions they normally Google. I’m sure administrators are trying to see how they can use it to “take the pressure off” their employees (then fire some employees to “tighten the belt”).
If they can figure out how to fact check the AI results, maybe my opinion can change, but as long as AI can convincingly lie and not even know it’s lying, it’s a super dangerous tool.
