Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds reckons AI is ‘90% marketing and 10% reality’English
2·1 year agoIn a way he’s right, but it depends! If you take even a common example like Chat GPT or the native object detection used in iPhone cameras, you’d see that there’s a lot of cool stuff already enabled by our current way of building these tools. The limitation right now, I think, is reacting to new information or scenarios which a model isn’t trained on, which is where all the current systems break. Humans do well in new scenarios based on their cognitive flexibility, and at least I am unaware of a good framework for instilling cognitive flexibility in machines.

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon will “ramp up” Prime Video ads in 2025English
51·1 year agoWhat’s good about Amazon anyway? It’s better to get stuff directly from a sellers site, even better if they’re indie. There’s not much value to prime shipping anymore, most sellers are pretty good about it now ironically because of Amazon. Using services like Amazon just creates more pollution, wage depression and small business closures. Use services like Amazon less, favor indie and small and fair wage businesses

94·1 year agoThat’s not what it’s saying at all, it’s talking about immobilization as a survival strategy as induced by the body’s neurophysiology, think of it as another option after flight vs fight responses.
Here’s the report mentioned in the article https://explore.bps.org.uk/content/report-guideline/bpsrep.2020.rep133
Edit looking closely, the report itself doesn’t mention anything about the immobilization defense.
Edit2 so on further review, I agree that this article is low quality. Apologies, was just browsing while half asleep and thought it was interesting
Polyvagal theory itself does not seem promising so far. Oh well, editing this post to highlight that…

3·2 years agoThere’s nothing inherently wrong with doing quality assurance work, but I think the workers are being fooled into thinking it’s less valuable work than their old job. In fact, based on QA in other industries, I’d say these workers should be getting paid more. This is why unions are important, otherwise people just get fooled or bullied into accepting bad deals

Technology@lemmy.world•How Google Ruined the Internet | Adam ConoverEnglish
11·2 years agoI hate that the internet is reliant on tech giant infrastructure. I think part of the problem is that data centers and energy grids are not decentralized or capable of being sustained in an open source manner (unless a benevolent entity funds such a thing)

Stalin is one good example of LWA leaders, others are Ho Chi Minh, Khrushchev etc. If given the chance and power, some fourth wave feminists would definitely become such leaders themselves. The core issue is tribalism and the belief that just because someone subscribes to your ideology they are “good”, and everyone else is “bad”.
That said, I think the thing authoritarianism denies people is self-actualization. As long as someone is not denying the self actualization of another, they’re not authoritarian. This isn’t about centrism or liberalism, this is about letting societies decide things for themselves while minimizing hurt to others because of sociopathy or callousness. From my pov, authoritarianism doesn’t respect human rights or freedoms in favor of tribalism.
