Linux@lemmy.ml•Optimizing Linux for an AMD (Ryzen 7 7840HS) Xiaomi Laptop
2·1 year agoI use a Lenovo 14APH8 (Ideapad Pro 5) which is essentially the same system specification. Pretty brilliant laptop but the drivers have been struggling until this year, finally! Especially with high DPI, high refresh rate screens where memory corruption is easier to run into.
Brilliant post by the way. I’ve just spotted that Smokeless UMAF which might help alleviate the issue I’ve noticed on my laptop which is Lenovo giving me 28GB of RAM but only 1GB of DMA Buffer. Absolutely bullshit when my Steamdeck runs fine with 4GB and barely touches the swapfile. I wonder if this’ll let me get the true 780M performance I yearn for!
EDIT: Hell yeah UMA buffer override lets fuckin GOOOOO
This is very cool. Im a fan of Nix from a tech perspective but im still not sold because of its poor UX, among many other complaints. IMO it’s the future of the Linux distro, but now that might be closer than before!

Idk where you assumed 4k 120hz HDR from the post?
https://dietpi.com can be configured for Kodi. Youll be limited to 1080p H264 for streaming, as long as your Plex server can transcode to that format you should be OK.
It’ll probs support any xinput-compatible pad, too.
Not sure about moonlight support on Pi/Linux but again you’ll be limited by the decode.
- Assuming you have a Pi4B, by the way.
I’ve been using wayland on my laptop somce the new year and beyond some driver issues that were purely on AMD’s side (and not entirely Wayland exclusive either) I’ve had no problems.
Stuff like application scaling works so much nicer on Wayland, and X11 just wasn’t very stable when handling fullscreen games to the point where I’d set games to borderless or even windowed mode to stop it crapping out on alt-tab
This shit isnt new, companies have been exploiting reddit to push products as if they’re real people for years. The “put reddit after your search to fix it!!!” thing was a massive boon for these shady advertisers who no doubt benefitted from random people assuming product placements were genuine.

3·2 years agoFirefox for android supports extensions so could probably use youtube mp4 there. Not sure what other youtube frontends (if functional still since the crackdown) support changing the codec

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linus Torvalds Injects Tabs To Thwart Kconfig Parsers Not Correctly Handling Them
7·2 years agoThe Register did a good article covering the change.
Source files should be conservative with the standard they expect from the developer, and parsers should be liberal in what they expect from the source, ie. allow deviations from the standard.
Python for example supposedly only allows 4 spaces for indentation, but as long as the developer is consistent most if not all Python interpreters will accept any kind of indentation.
One of the most hated features of Windows 10 and they removed it just to add it back later lmao. They deffo had this planned all along and knew it would hurt their already terrible upgrade rates if they added it from the start

Linux@lemmy.ml•What's your experience with Electron alternatives
4·2 years agoIf you need multi platform support in one codebase, Flutter is a good choice. Ubuntu uses it for their new OS installer and GUI package manager.
Quite easy to get set up on Linux (though the recommended route is using Snaps).
No waiting ages for a massive node_modules folder to fill up, nor the general pain of using javascript; dart is a really nice language to write in.
You wont get the smallest binaries with it, but it’s powerful, reliable, and pretty damn performant for a “non native” framework.

Technology@lemmy.world•Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with adsEnglish
12·2 years agoMutually assured destruction if they were able to do this, because every other company that has a device that interfaces with HDMI would immediately implement their own ad-hijacking system that would fight for the same screen space during those “breaks”.
Not to mention that if Roku saw some unknown time to monetize the screen, surely the host device they’re trying to draw over would’ve done it by now.
Maybe they could plaster ads over their screensaver to ruin their own experience before trying to do it to someone else.

270GB feels insane for the source code of a single organisation. Is there media assets or backups in there too?
EDIT: yep, multiple subsidiaries and slack Comms which could inflate it by a lot. we post a whole lot of uncompressed shit on our slack
