I have been wanting one since these were released. My old Asus laptop from 2016 is still kicking, so I guess I’ll wait till it craps the bed.
I had issues with mints install a while back. Turns out that it was my flash drive failing during the install. I used a newer one with bigger capacity and it worked fine. Not sure if tried a different USB but it’s worth a shot.
EDIT: based on your comments you probably have a different issue. But this might help someone else.
That’s very helpful, thanks!
I have an RTX 4070 ti super and it works great. But I use proprietary drivers.
Nvtop showed everything normal. The GPU power was below the TDP.
I don’t think so. I booted up a 2d side scroller game with the GPU usage at 40% and CPU at 9% and it still says I’m throttling just sitting at the main menu. I did put GPU power in mangohud but it always shows 0 watts.
I’m not sure. This is my first time using amd. I’m using linux mint on kernel 6.8.0-52. I typed in that command and nothing happened.
I’ll just do a clean install and re do it lol.
Thanks for the info. I’ll make sure to double check all that before. I have another question. If I edited fstab to add mounting hard drives on boot. Will I have to redo that when I hook my drive up to a new mobo? Or will the drive UUIDs and mount paths be the same?
Yes. I’ve made posts about my problems before. But I use an E drum kit to trigger vsts in a daw. It’s just easier for me to use windows.
I recently made the switch to linux as well and I have it on my laptop and gaming PC. I do keep a portable install of windows on an external drive for more niche cases, such as music production which I had terrible luck with on Linux. When I booted up my laptop with the windows drive, I noticed that my keyboard backlight wasn’t working. And it took me a second to realize that Windows doesn’t come with basic drivers… In Linux mint, my keyboard backlight worked right away. I also wish I made the jump to Linux much earlier.
This worked. My first install of mangohud was through the git hub instructions. But when I installed it through my package manager, it works in steam now. Thanks
So then how would I use it in lutris and steam?
I’m on Linux mint 22 and my audio outputs don’t change automatically. When I plug in USB headphones, audio won’t output to them unless I manually change it in settings.
Also, why can’t I interact with the panel applets (on the right side) while I’m in game? For example: I’m playing a game, I plug in my headphones, I have to manually change the audio output so I hit the “windows” key to bring up the panel, but I can’t interact with any of the applets on the right side of the panel (I can’t select the audio icon and change settings from there). I have to search audio settings in the panel then alt tab to it. It’s really cumbersome
Thanks for your help with my problem. I ultimately decided to retry my method due to a video I found detailing the method and it worked. I updated my OP to include more details if you wanna read what I did. But I did successfully dual boot onto 2 separate drives.
That’s good to know. I would prefer using mint because I’ve been using it in my laptop for a while now and I’m comfortable with it. I really appreciate your help and time answering my questions. I will try dual booting again this weekend.
That’s very generous. I was planning on using windows 10 and Linux mint. But I was doing some research and it seems like bazzite is more focused towards gaming and I wasn’t sure if I should use that instead of mint.
Thanks for the response. That is really helpful. I am going to try again and hopefully it will work better this time.
There’s plenty of tutorials on YouTube to walk you through installing all the major linux distros. And distros like mint are pretty streamlined now. It’s pretty straight forward. And there’s a good community here that is always willing to help.
