Interestingly, there is a “small web” or “frugal” tech alternative which goes back to the basics:

A pleasure to read and fun to set up an own server. I run an agate server (written in Rust) on a Raspberry Pi B which is attached to my home router. Needs only about 1 Watt of power.
(Note that the Gemini protocol is not related in any manner to the Google AI stuff - it was in fact published before Google did its deed.)
