I remember a story coming out of Ukraine where a bunch of guys were making fake ‘news’ sites loaded with advertising to spam ragebait articles for cash. They said that they made way more money by posting right wing content so that’s what they focused on.
Multiply that by a bunch of people and add in adversarial nation’s influence campaigns and you get Donald Trump.
