So are we assuming here that LLMs won’t become more efficient over time? GPT-3 has been a frontier model just a few years ago and it’s performance blew everyone’s mind at that time. I can now run equivalent LLM on my personal computer. Why can’t we expect that after a few years Claude Sonnet level of capability won’t be possible to accomplish locally?

I’m curious how it will turn out to be in a long term. Are we going to have safer software? Because not only defenders will have a powerful tool, but attackers too. But at the same time, number of bugs is finite… Can we in theory one day achieve literally zero bugs in codebase?
Why would I want to use it instead of or alongside with Syncthing? What does it do better?

So how dangerous is that really? I assume one day we’ll finally see investors saying, “Nah, that’s a bubble. I’m not gonna see any returns from those companies - I’m selling.” Then stock prices will fall, and some investors will lose money by selling for less than they bought. After that, AI unicorns will start to lose funding and close their businesses, laying off people.
But will I - a person who does not work in the AI industry and has not invested in AI companies - be affected by this?
Please add some context for someone not up to date with all that jargon. There is a trend here and on hacker news to just post a model name that says basically nothing and I often just don’t even know why I should care. Or maybe I shouldn’t?
You need to understand a few things. In order to keep email service usable, Proton need to fight any malicious activity. If they didn’t do it, ProtonMail would be quickly blacklisted by other mail providers as it will be interpreted as source of spam. At the same time, they have very limited capabilities to verify this activity by themselves as they cannot read contents of their user’s emails (it is encrypted) and they keep limited logs.
As an article states, here is what happened:
Proton’s official account replied the following day, stating that Proton had been “alerted by a CERT that certain accounts were being misused by hackers in violation of Proton’s Terms of Service. This led to a cluster of accounts being disabled. The main problem is that mobile OS is simply not useful without banking or government apps and they won’t ever appear on FOSS systems because giving control to user is exactly the opposite of what’s in their interest.

To that end the company is developing a “Pay Per Crawl” system, which would give content creators the option to request payment from AI companies for utilising their original content.
So Cloudflare is not as much “saving the Internet”, as just becoming a middleman between LLM training companies and content creators. Which I believe has a potential of being a true goldmine in the future.

Wow, have they just realised that not every single thing computers do is actually useful to anyone? I think screens that show things when nobody’s looking cost a lot more on a global scale.

So you could not pair non-apple device with your Apple device? And seriously no smartwatch could work with iPhone other than Apple Watch?
Why not? Why Microsoft develops it’s .NET ecosystem? Why Google develops Go/Dart? It costs them lots of money and they give it for free.
The answer is: they don’t earn money on it directly, but these tools are a way to tie programmers to their cloud services. If you use .NET you’ll probably end up on Azure. If Go - probably you’ll use GCP.
So I suspect the same will be with LLMs. At some point they will say: “hey, you can use this LLM however you want, but as you are already using it, then you may want to know our platform is optimized for it”
