Technology@lemmy.world•How Bluesky, Alternative to X and Facebook, Is Handling GrowthEnglish
113·1 year agoYeah too bad they didn’t get into it earlier, but it has hit a critical mass of users and attention lately.

14·1 year agoThe reason people post on these sites is to make themselves heard I guess. You just have to ignore or block your way into the level of interaction you’re comfortable with.

Technology@lemmy.world•Twitter is dead. Long live BlueSky.English

Bluesky can fuck right off as well. I tried it to see if it was any different than Twitter but I had to nope out after 10 minutes.
I’ve never understood the whole Twitter formula anyways. Scroll through endless ramblings of people I don’t care about? No thanks.
There are far better places to stay informed about certain topics or get in touch with people you know.

122·1 year agoTo be fair Musk buying twitter and turning it into a Nazi propaganda site was kind of flukey.

64·1 year agoNot every social media format is for everyone, no need to be hostile about it. I just can’t bring myself to engage with TikTok and Reels and such, but other people really like them and why would that be a problem for me?

Technology@lemmy.world•Bluesky feels more like old Twitter than X doesEnglish
83·1 year agoThe way Mastodon is broken up into little communities such that it’s hard for anything to go viral and you can’t easily search for everything being said about a topic kills a lot of the value of old-twitter. Comes from Mastodon having been created as a twitter alternative with a different philosophy back in the old twitter days, while bluesky is more a reaction to Musk twitter used by people who didn’t have a problem with the old version.

71·1 year agoI’d be happy enough if it just ended up replicating pre-Musk twitter - that was a cool website! And in practice as you say with the federated decentralized aspect and a core userbase of anti-fascists it will likely be even better.

16·1 year agoI think a lot of people were sticking around to follow election news and try to effect the conversation, and are bailing now that it’s over in hopes of building up bluesky by the next one.

Technology@lemmy.world•Bluesky Might End Up Defeating Twitter Once and for AllEnglish
4·1 year agoBluesky grew out of a project at twitter whose goal was to create a federated protocol. Then when they were split off from twitter when Musk took over they had to start their own twitter-style platform to be the first player in that federated protocol. Now that that part is running they’re gradually building out the originally planned system of allowing more servers to be part of the federation: https://docs.bsky.app/docs/advanced-guides/federation-architecture

4·1 year agoThat would be great - much better than the current situation where twitter is run like a right-wing site but still has people from across the political spectrum hanging out there due to inertia.

21·1 year agoThat’s where the federated angle comes in. Not quite there yet, but as the network grows the vulnerability to the original node getting taken over by a bad actor lessens.

3·1 year agoHow do you work the office only having space for 20% of employees? Makes a lot of sense but would be annoying to hot desk. My office only has us in two days a week but has not cut down on the number of desks at all, giving up the potential savings.
