Americans have come to think of Chinese products as bad quality because of the American companies who engage them for cheaper labor. Walmart was known to order products made to a certain spec one year, then the next year demand the company increase production, but for the same amount paid as the previous year. The Chinese company, not wanting to lose the contract, obliges, but corners have to be cut. It should be called Americanesium, not Chineseum.

Derek Guy (Die, Workwear!) posted a thread a while back (I think about 6 months ago) about how the Chinese can and do make great quality products, pointing out high quality fabrics. Give them money to buy good raw materials, give them a decent wage, and they’ll put out a good product. Honestly, they probably have a more fair work ethic than some American companies that just feed their CEOs massive salaries or are owned by private equity.

I still use Facebook (many friends and relatives still there) but only through the web browser. Never ever install an app if you can help it. FB has tried to make the web version worse and worse in the mobile browser, though, to try to force people to use the app. Comment input boxes got janky and now chat is impossible unless you check “desktop site”. These things worked fine a couple years ago.

I was fucking irked when I wanted to use Hey Google to add something to my grocery list. I had switched to Gemini not realizing its scope, and suddenly Gemini was needing voice permission then some other seemingly unrelated, unnecessary permission (can’t recall exactly but something like collaborative documents) to add to my grocery list. Fuck that. Then it seemed very difficult to find the setting to switch back to Google assistant, but I eventually found it.

I was actually curious about this several years ago. In 2020 I started two investments, one has investment decisions made by a team of people, the other is not billed as AI but automated. I started them about the same time and with the same amount of money. 5 years later they are still nearly the same, the automated one slightly higher than the human one much of the time but not always.

They’re on this stupid renaming kick. Renaming all the “woke” names back to the “original” white slavers and racists these places originally honored. There are few enough brain cells and energy in government and this is what Trump is making them waste it on. Gulf of THE AmericaS would make sense but obviously the intent is to claim it as the US’s.

Think about the technology we have now - a lot of it was inspired by Star Trek technology. Communicators -> smartphones/watches, shuttle -> Rovers, non invasive medical diagnosis, large screens, video calls. And that’s just from TOS. And I’m pretty sure people are still working on creating Transporters.

I used Honey before thr PayPal purchase and it did have working discount codes, as well as a cashback thing that I redeemed a couple times. But I haven’t had any codes work for a long time.

I don’t have any love for influencers but they have the right to make money IMO, and it’s completely shitty behavior for honey to be taking that away from them.

Safe? Clearly no. Trigger lock? Cable lock? If one were there, there should be a mention of picking it or cutting it. Unloaded? Also clearly no.

There are so many ways, any of which take a whole 20 seconds, the parents could have used to prevent this from happening.

I took a Waymo robotaxi in San Francisco a couple weeks ago. It was easy to use and I felt very safe; generally they drive like your granny. My second ride we ended up briefly stopped behind someone trying to do a left turn in an unexpected spot, and the car wavered left and right for a moment as it tried to decide what to do, not unlike human drivers. Given Tesla’s not so great record on full self driving, I think given the choice I would probably stick with Waymo.

Americans would not want the price of produce to get higher but a) it relies on employing undocumented labor and b) it’s very hard to find American citizens these days willing to do that kind of hard physical work.

So it can notify you when the water has reached the set temperature or the time you set for cooking is up. Which can be handy. However, I found the BT very weak on my Anova and it would lose connection when I went into my home office a mere 25’ away, so I stopped using it. There’s actually no need for the water to be up to temperature before you put your food in, and food can sit as long as you want; half the point of sous vide is to be able to hold food at temp without overcooking. So you don’t really need the timer either.

Fi makes it pretty clear that use outside the US is meant to be temporary (unless you’re on military duty overseas). The person you replied to got a really long run and honestly has no cause for complaint.

Question: if you skipped signing in to Microsoft when you set up Windows, does this f’upgrade still happen?
