Technology@lemmy.world•TikTok says it's restoring service to US users based on Trump's promised executive orderEnglish
1·1 year agoI’m way more interested in the reactions of Google, Apple, Oracle, and the dozens of other corporations ByteDance depends on.
The “90-day extension” Trump keeps talking about has no basis in law except to conclude an in-process divestment, which currently doesn’t exist. He can order the law not to be enforced, but you’re still breaking the law. It’ll interesting to see if those companies are willing to along with an executive order their counsel knows is illegal or are willing to knowingly break the law under the promise they won’t be prosecuted (for now).
edit: IANAL

Technology@lemmy.world•Why the Fediverse is not (yet) Billionaire-Proof, or: The 51% Attack for the FediverseEnglish
571·2 years agoBut while that’s a very lucky thing to have, the issue is that we depend on the owner of Mastodon to not sell the company to a billionaire.
We don’t depend on that. Buying Mastodon would get them the branding but not Mastodon itself. It’s all GPL/AGPL and would be forked immediately if sold. The buyer would have no control over it.
Oracle may have owned OpenOffice but it didn’t matter. Everyone uses LibreOffice now. Same shit.

Technology@lemmy.world•Threads is officially starting to test ActivityPub integrationEnglish
4·2 years agoThat’s a good question. I don’t know. My guess is that you could be exposed to Threads content you don’t want in the same way you could be exposed to Mastodon content you don’t want. I can’t imagine they’re not set up to respect blocks, mutes, or server suspensions though, right? They have a way bigger problem than Threads if they don’t.

Technology@lemmy.world•Threads is officially starting to test ActivityPub integrationEnglish
202·2 years agoAlso, given the vast differences in daily active users, wouldn’t Mastodon become flooded, and eventually dependent, on Threads content?
Servers only pull subscribed user content, so it’s not like the option is nothing or The Firehose. Meta can’t push content into the Fediverse.
I think it’s important to note that Meta doesn’t have more power than anyone else here. They’re just a large instance. They have the same forces keeping them honest as anyone else and their size doesn’t change the incentives for mods and admins. Mods don’t have an interest in working for Meta for free. If they’re spending too much of their time moderating that content, Threads will be limited or defederated.
Given Meta’s size and history it’s understandable to be concerned. At the end of the day though, they’ll either play nice or get bounced. I think we’ll be fine either way.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google announces April 2024 shutdown date for Google PodcastsEnglish
2·2 years agoIt depends on your usage, for sure. For me, I’m more on the side of not seeing much there that’s valuable enough to subscribe to, though I’d probably pay a few bucks for the app just to support them. I think that if you’re happy with Google Podcasts, though, you’ll be happy with Pocket Casts without a subscription. It’s not like you have to pay for basic functionality, like downloading or queuing episodes, which is the evil version of the subscription model.

Yes. And the statute of limitations is a year into the next admin. This agreement is them acknowledging that they’re breaking the law.
